conductedaccordingto PRISMA guidelines.MethodologyWe searched MEDLINE,CINAHL,British NursingIndex,Evidence Based Medicine Reviews,and Cochrane Library databasesfrom inception until March2019.Search terms included ‘brief intervention’,‘screening’,‘motivational interview’,‘alcohol education’, ‘randomised controlled trial’, ‘RCT’.We included RCTs publishedin Englishassessingeffectivenessof fourtypes interventionson reducingalcohol-related harms amongmoderateand heavy drinkers aged18 years oldandabove.ResultsOur search identified six RCTs assessingbrief interventions,nine RCTs assessingscreenings,and nine RCTs assessingmotivational interviews.Two RCTs assessedalcohol education.Our search identified four RCTsinvolvingmoderate drinkersand seventeenRCTsinvolvingheavy drinkers.No RCT involvedboth moderateand heaviedrinkers.We excluded two RCTsandone quasi-RCTbecause participantswerenot aged18 years oldandabove.In total,fourteen RCTswere includedin our review.These studies involved sixdifferent countriesincludingAustralia,South Africa,Austria,Ireland,andUnited Kingdom.Studies recruitedparticipantsfrom universities,hospitals,outpatient clinics,schoolsof nursing,schoolsof medicine,and community settings.Participants had different drinking statusincludingheavydrinking,episodicheavydrinking,binge drinking,and harmful drinking.Studies recruited participantswith different characteristicsincludingage,male/female sex,different ethnicities,and different occupations.ResultsFourteen studies assessedeffectivenessof fourtypesinterventionson reducingalcohol-related harm.Three studies assessedbrief interventions,two studiesassessedscreenings,eight studiessessedmotivational interviews,and one studyassessedalcohol education.Effective outcomeswere measuredusing AUDITscores,a measure ofsensitivityto alcoholproblems.Assessment methods variedbetweenstudies.Some used face-to-face assessmentothersused telephoneassessment.Some used paper-basedassessment,othersused electronicassessment.Some assessment methodsinvolvedaudiorecordedassessment,othersinvolved video-assessment.Almost allstudies reportedAUDIT scoresas continuousoutcomes.Some reportedAUDIT scoresas dichotomousoutcomes.Statistical methods variedbetweenstudies.Some used t-testfor continuousoutcomes,othersused chi-squaretestfor dichotomousoutcomes.Analysis methods variedbetweenstudies.Some used intention-to-treatanalysis,othersused per protocolanalysis.Sensitivity analyses were performedbysome studies,butnotall.Several studies didnot reportblindingmethodology.Several studiesshowed biasrisk.However,the bias riskwas lowoverall.ConclusionThis reviewidentified fourteenRCTson effectivenessof fourtypesinterventionson reducingalcoholrelated harm.These include threeRCTsonbrief interventions,twoRCTsonscreenings,eightRCTsonmotivational interviews,andoneRCTonalcohol education.These
